To make it easier for you to navigate our site, we provide the following tips. Many of these tips you will find useful in many of your PC's programs. If you ever need help while visiting our site, the yellow parrot will always be along the left side of your screen to help. Our navigation buttons (the BandAids along the left) are always in the same place as well. If you click on the Search button that the parrot is sitting on, a window will pop up with a map of our site plus a search box for you to enter what you are searching for. - Underlined Words
- Whenever you see an underlined word in our site, it usually is a link to another page. This means that if you click on the underlined word, it brings the other page up on your screen.
- BandAid Buttons
- The BandAid buttons along the left hand side of our site are called navigation buttons and can always be used to navigate through our site. Just click on a BandAid to be taken to the corresponding area of our site.
- Sending us email
- To send us email, you can click the Contact Us BandAid button and then click on the link that says Info@AllAnimalsExoticOrSmall.com. This usually brings up your default mail program with Info@AllAnimalsExoticOrSmall.com in the To: line. Or, just bring up your default mail program and type Info@AllAnimalsExoticOrSmall.com in the To: line.
- Previous Page
- Whenever you want to see a previous page, use your browser's "Back" button.
- Grayed out Buttons and Menu Items that Don't Work
- It is a convention in many Windows programs and in the popular browsers to "gray out" items that currently aren't applicable. So, if you think your BACK button isn't working, it may be because in that particular instance it isn't applicable. For example, if you just opened your browser and this was the first page you viewed, then there isn't a page to go back to, so the BACK button is grayed out.
- Page Load Times
- Ever notice that sites you go to frequently load a lot quicker? This is because most of the programs used the surf the Internet (called browsers) have a temporary storage area used to store items you access frequently so that it doesn't have to download the pictures and text every time. You can configure this yourself. In Internet Explorer (and some versions of AOL), you select Tools along the horizontal menu at the top of your screen, select Internet Options, and then the General tab has a section for Temporary Internet Files. If you click on settings, you can customize this for how often to check for new material on a page and also how much disk space to use to store frequently viewed pages. In Netscape Navigator, you can customize this by selecting Edit along the horizontal menu, then selecting Preferences, clicking on Advanced, and then clicking on Cache. Consult your browser's "help" menu item for additional information.
- Pop-Up Windows
- Some of the links on our site, such as the photo album links, bring up a separate smaller window in addition to the current window being viewed. These separate windows will always have a button at the bottom to close them. If they are larger than your screen height, they will have a scroll bar along the right so you can get to the Close button. Alternatively, as is the Windows convention, you can always click on the X in the upper right corner of a window to close it.
To print a pop-up window, click the right mouse button on the background of the pop-up window. This causes a menu to pop-up with several options. Select "print" by clicking it with your left mouse button.
- Microsoft Windows Conventions
- Most programs written using the standard Microsoft Windows conventions (e.g. Word, Excel, the popular Internet browsers, most PC software, etc) have three symbols in the upper right corner of the window. The "X" can be used to close the window. The "-" can be used to minimize the window. Depending on whether the window is currently maximized or at a smaller window size will determine whether the middle symbol in the upper right is a single square or two overlapping squares. If it is a single square, that means the current window is not taking up the entire screen and you can maximize it (make it take up the entire screen) by clicking on the single square. If it is two overlapping squares, that means the current window is filling the screen (maximized) and you can make it smaller by clicking on the overlapping squares.
The other convention is that the current window has a highlighted (usually blue) title bar at the top. If the current window isn't maximized, you can move it around by dragging the title bar with your left mouse button. To drag a window, you click and hold down your left mouse button on the title bar and move the mouse while you're holding the button down. The window will follow your mouse.
- Unable to Access Web Site
- Our web server boasts a 99.8% uptime with continuous network monitoring to insure performance. Our server also has multiple connections to the Internet backbone for uninterrupted bandwidth. Many times if a person can't view a web site, the problem may be with their connection to the Internet or their Internet Service Provider's (ISP's) connection to the Internet. Check and see if you can get to any other sites via your browser. Try to bring up a site that you haven't visited before (e.g. http://www.netmechanic.com) so that it isn't in your cache (the storage area browsers use to store pages you visit frequently). Many times people will have lost their phone connection but still think they are connected because the page is stored locally in their browser's cache and comes up fine. If you can't bring up the other sites in your browser, you may want to contact your ISP (e.g. AOL, EarthLink, FlashNet, Juno, MSN) about the problem. If you can bring up other sites and not ours, please click here to perform additional troubleshooting techniques and mail the resulting traceroute file to webmaster@AllAnimalsExoticOrSmall.com describing the problem, including the date/time, browser version, and your ISP.
