My husband joked on the way home from the animal hospital about being able to share our dog’s muscle relaxants and pain medications if his runs out. My husband has chronic back problems, including a fusion surgery of the C5 and C6 degenerative discs. Hubby has taken muscle relaxants and pain medications for his back for around 25 years. Even though I knew my husband was joking about this, I really know much about canine pain medications, so I did some research and what I learned was very alarming. Sharing your dog’s pain medications can kill you.

We recently rushed our 8-year old AKC-registered Maltese dog, Spike, to the animal hospital around 10 pm. We came home from a motion picture around 8 pm and Spike was whining, moaning, and could not walk. The dog tried to walk, but could only use his front paws and painfully drug his limp back legs along the ground. When we touched the dog to see if he had cuts, stickers, broken bones or whatever, Spike let out a horrendous scream.

For the next two hours, Spike would not eat or drink water. The dog continued intermittent displays of excruciating pain. At first, we thought he may have a bowel blockage, or some issue with his kidney or liver because his abdominal area seemed to be a bit bloated. We decided to take him to the animal hospital to get x-rayed. We found out that our dog injured his back, probably from jumping off the bed, and was having spine pain and muscle spasms, just like a human does. The veterinarian that this is typical in aging small dogs weighing less than 10 pounds.

The veterinarian prescribed two medications for our dog: Tramadol HCL Tabs and Rimadyl 25 mg tabs and stated to take Spike to our regular veterinarian is the pain did not subside within 24 hours. He also stated to call him back immediately if Spike experiences vomiting, seizures, or other abnormal reactions. I immediately wanted to know more about these drugs.

Possible Dangerous Tramadol HCL Side Effects

Tramadol HCL, or tramadol hydrochloride, is an analgesic sometimes given to humans under the trade name ULTRAM for moderate to moderately severe pain. There have been numerous studies on the use of Tramadol for various pain symptoms in humans, including pain from dental work. Tramadol HCL can have hazardous side effects, including seizures and death, in humans who are:

Hypersensitive to opioids, use alcohol, use hypnotics or psychotropic drugs, or use other centrally acting analgesics like codeine or morphine. In some cases of Tramadol overdose, injecting Naloxone, which is used to counteract heroin overdose, can actually increase the chance of seizure.

Using selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI antidepressants or anorectics), tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), and other tricyclic compounds (e.g., cyclobenzaprine, promethazine, etc.), MAO inhibitors, neuroleptics, tranquilizers, or opioids.

Already sensitive to seizures from epilepsy, head trauma, metabolic disorders, alcohol and drug withdrawal, and CNS infections.

Other possible Tramadol HCL side effects include:

Pruritus, hives, bronchospasm, angioedema, respiratory distress, impaired renal function, impair mental or physical abilities, dizziness, constipation, headache, and nausea

Withdrawal symptoms from suddenly stopping Tramadol HCL include:

anxiety, sweating, insomnia, rigors, pain, nausea, tremors, diarrhea, upper respiratory symptoms, piloerection, and in rare cases, hallucinations.

Keep the Dog Pain Medications Away from Children

Children may think since their favorite pet is taking medications for make it feel better, that they can take some too, like candy. Tramadol HCL can be a very drug. Keep the dog medication away from children, elderly family, and pregnant women. For more information about the dangerous side effects of Tramadol HCL, visit this FDA web site:

Rimadyl 25 for Dogs. Not for Cats or Humans

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Rimadyl for dogs in 1996. Rimadyl is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis in dogs. NSAIDs are commonly used in human medicine like aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen for relief of pain. Carprofen, the active ingredient in Rimadyl, is not approved for use in humans. You should never give Rimadyl to cats.

Rimadyl is one of two NSAID products currently approved for use in dogs. Rimadyl is available by veterinary prescription only. For more information about using Rimadyl with your dog and the possible side effects of Rimadyl, visit these two FDA web site brochures:

Health Care in America is by far the most high-priced in the world. On a per capita basis, and as a total portion of GDP. And the drug costs are too. The same drug bought in America can be found overseas for a fraction of the cost. America has the highest infant mortality rate of major industrialized nations. We have the highest ratio of uninsured. And we share the dubious distinction (with South Africa) of being the only industrialized nation that doesn’t guarantee health care for all its citizens.

Why, in light of all the cash spent, is the system so broken? The answer is also money. In every level of care providing, the dollar is the driving force. And more cash is eaten up by administrative costs than anywhere else. Estimates vary from a low of 19% to a high of 25% of total health care costs go to the paperwork and management. Entire corporations exist just to manage (and extract profits from) health care. In short, we are the only industrialized nation that doesn’t provide health care because we are the only ones who view it as a commodity, for sale for whatever the market will bear.

How did we get into this mess? The mistaken premise that private entities can do superior than public ones. The prevailing thought promoting individual responsibility. Conservative opposition to progressive health care. Pure greed. Successful target marketing promoting assorted treatments and medications that really aren’t needed. The reasons are many.

What are the solutions? Start recognizing quality health care as a right as opposed to a commodity. Restrict the obscene levels of profit seen throughout the system. Make the system care driven, not profit driven. It is inspiring that so many people are starting to talk about it. Now, with the system still spiraling upward, proposals from the past are looking superior and better. Hillary Clinton, Harry Truman, Franklin Roosevelt, Lyndon Johnson, and many others- all were perhaps ahead of their time. And perhaps their time is coming. A growing movement in Oregon that I have become involved with is the Archimedes movement. It is a grass roots organizations looking to bring real change. for more information, visit archimedesmovement.org

The Essential Tips On Your Auto Insurance Ratings Auto insurance ratings are the standards used by car insurance companies to decide how much you are going to pay on your insurance policy. It varies from company to company and for this reason auto cover might not be the same in all firms because diverse standard are used to determine your quote. When the need for an car insurance arises for you for the first time, it is significant that you do your homework by getting all the information you can in respect of motor vehicle insurance and the companies that provide it.If you will go online, you can find tons of articles, guides, tips, and other information about this single topic.

The insurance company considers specific things before offering you auto insurance quotes, but every car insurance firms consider few things. Motor insurance agency takes into consideration your driving record. Records have shown that people who drive drunken, speed or have been involved in car accident are more likely to be in a future automobile disaster. This is why your premiums will increase after a motor accident because it indicates you will possibly be involved in some other car disaster.

Vehicle insurance policy might cost higher or lower as a result of your profile with an auto insurance provider. For instance, automobile insurance premiums are really expensive for beginner drivers or teen drivers. The level of your competent will be considered by many insurance companies as higher risk or lower risk drivers that would possibly make frequent or no claims.

By keeping good driving records for many years will enable you to pay lower insurance cover. This is why your vehicle policy premiums will be less expensive after a few accident free years.

Auto insurers also consider your geographic location, because the cost of the average claim is higher in some regions than others. You can save some money on your van insurance even if the auto insurance ratings have not been kind to you. Do research on less expensive insurance policy online.

Nestled in the hilly region of southern Colorado just off I-25 in Trinidad, Colorado is a remarkable La Quinta Hotel. (Address: 2833 Toupal Drive, Trinidad, Co 81082). A visit to this facility will provide travelers with a one-of-a-kind lodging experience. Trinidad, Colorado La Quinta (LQ.com) has combined a quality hotel with large, pleasingly decorated rooms and suites as well as a full wellness program for all hotel guests. Not only does this hotel have the usual guest work out room, it takes it up a notch and provides work out assistance.

Touting this hotel as a “wellness” hotel sets the bar rather high when being compared to other hotels. La Quinta has really stepped up with this facility and does not disappoint! There are indoor and outdoor pools with scheduled water aerobics for all ages. Water aerobics are available on Monday and Wednesday evenings at 5:00p.m. for a fee of $5.00. On Tuesdays and Fridays at 5 p.m. there are yoga classes, and on Thursday evening, again at 5 p.m. Pilate’s classes are available. (A $5.00 fee applies). Pilate’s classes Saturday mornings at 9 a.m. are a great way to begin the day, and the $5.00 fee is minimal in relationship to the benefit! No reservations are required to take part in these fitness activities, so feel free to walk in and join the group.

A full service Spa provides massages, wraps and facials with flexible scheduling to fit the needs of busy hotel guests. Spa services are based on availability of time, and the hotel provides the phone number (1-719-859-3320) for scheduling. Check out time is 12 noon allowing for a morning swim, or a massage before beginning your day.

The Lobby area welcomes you in with a burning fireplace, comfortable seating and tasteful stained glass pieces. Just off the Lobby is Ole’s Cantina, — what a savior for the weary traveler! Ole’s Cantina is open late – usually until at least 10 p.m. (based on the hotel crowd). There is a cozy bar serving call drinks, blended drinks and sodas, as well as atmosphere and seating for families seeking nourishment. Ole’s menu is divided into ‘Snacks’ – which include nachos, hot wings, quesadillas, garlic cheese bread and battered boomers (beer battered mushrooms); ‘Fillers’ , which are sandwiches, including but not limited to Rueben’s, BLT’s and Turkey Bacon on Ciabatta roll. Then, there is this writer’s favorite – the Club, with ham, bacon, lettuce, tomato, turkey and mayo on either pizza dough or Ciabatta bread. My suggestion is trying the pizza version of this sandwich, with Ranch Dressing streamed on top…. Not only is it yummers (!) – It is a great bedtime snack after a long day of travel.

The only downside to Ole’s Cantina is that there is no room service available, so keep your clothes on because you have to run down and pick up your order when they call that it is ready. (Yep, I had to get out of my comfortable Pj’s, — but my Club pizza was worth it.)

This La Quinta in Trinidad, Colorado has gone to great lengths to provide cozy rooms and suites at competitive prices. The rooms are equipped with refrigerators, coffee pots, microwaves; the bedding and furniture are modern and pleasing, and flat screened TV’s, comfortable desks, and seating areas make the stay even more enjoyable.

Trinidad, Colorado is a beautiful tiny town to pass through, or to stop and spend a night or two. The La Quinta is on this writer’s list of places to return to because of the comfort and amenities provided, but also and most important, the hotel is pooch friendly! There is no fee for animals if you are a recurring La Quinta visitor, which I am and will continue to be.

Come to Trinidad, make this La Quinta your favorite stop, and try the Club on pizza dough!

New York, new York (Profitable.com) October is National Dental Hygiene Month and Celebrity Dentist and author Dr. Catrise Austin of VIP Smiles in new York City is launching a local consumer awareness campaign to alert residents of the new York/Tri-State community about the potential risks of postponing dental appointments and neglecting their oral health.

Dr. Austin’s Oral Healthcare Can’t Wait™ Campaign is a local component of a national awareness initiative sponsored by The Dental Trade Alliance (DTA), a nonprofit trade association representing leading dental manufacturers, distributors, and laboratories.

According to Dr. Catrise Austin, “There’s no denying that the last 3 years have been tough financially for many Americans across the nation including new York residents. The current economic climate is causing many people to either postpone the dental treatment plans by their dentists, or to put off dental visits altogether. unfortunately, there are long-term health risks associated with postponing oral care.”

Some of the health risks that Dr. Austin is referring to include the following:

Tooth decay is a progressive disease. Postponing treatment can lead to more complex, more invasive, and more costly treatment, such as root canals or extractions.

According to everydayhealth.com, one study in the Australian Dental Journal pegged tooth decay as one of the most common infectious oral diseases. these bacterial infections can be contagious and passed along.

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) warns that the mouth is the gateway to the body and is challenged by invasions by bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi. There are 120 diseases, including early signs of HIV infection, oral herpes virus, and oral cancer that can be detected while sitting in the dental chair. some of these diseases can be asymptomatic. Postponing your dental checkup could prevent the opportunity for early detection and treatment that could prolong or even save your life.

Recent studies that have been reviewed by The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) have linked undiagnosed and untreated gum disease with a negative impact on patients’ heart health, diabetes, pregnancy, and other systemic health conditions.

Chronic bad breath is usually due to conditions that may be easily prevented by regular oral hygiene appointments and consultation.

“With so many people looking for jobs or worried about their job security, it must be noted that having bad breath and discolored, damaged, or missing teeth are the kiss of death in today’s competitive job market,” explains Dr. Catrise Austin. “Your smile is the first thing employers, managers, and co-workers notice.”

Is the Oral Healthcare Can’t Wait Campaign just a way for dentists to make cash during tough times? Absolutely not, says Dr. Austin. “If more people truly comprehended the connection between oral health with the rest of the body and its overall health, I believe they would prioritize their discretionary spending accordingly. Choosing between undergoing gum disease or cavity treatment versus buying a new cell phone, wireless personal pad, weekly professional hair and nail grooming, or taking high-priced vacations would become a no-brainer.”

Here are some options to consider during your next dental visit:

Dental professionals are primarily focused on prevention when their patients allow them to do so. In addition, many patients are not taking full advantage of the scope of services covered by their dental insurance. Ask your dentist what can be done to prevent cavities such as dental sealants for permanent molars as well as fluoride treatment for adults.

Most dentists are very flexible when it comes to paying out-of-pocket expenses. Ask about substitute payment options like 0% interest financing, using a credit card, or working out an in-office payment plan.

Talk to your dentist about prioritizing your treatment plan. Ask what needs to be done immediately and what can wait until you have more discretionary income.

October is National Dental Hygiene Month: New York City Celebrity Dentist and Author Dr. Catrise Austin Says, Despite the Economy, ‘Oral Healthcare Can’t Wait’

Wisdom teeth are present in most people. At some point in your life, you will most likely have to get your wisdom teeth removed. Wisdom teeth removal is most likely done between the ages 15-25 and it is a very common procedure. You are probably wondering about wisdom teeth removal and how you can go about getting your wisdom teeth removed. Lets go over some of the basics of wisdom teeth removal.

Your wisdom teeth are called your third molars, which do not break through your gums until age 15-25. Most people’s wisdom teeth do not even make a presence, but the dentist insists that you get them removed before they cause any problems. Getting your wisdom teeth removed at an earlier age is very beneficial because you are less likely to run into issues that are associated with wisdom teeth removal. Wisdom teeth removal is essential for your health and for your oral care.

Your wisdom teeth will be removed by an oral surgeon. You will be put under a general anesthetic for the procedure. Once your wisdom teeth have been removed, there is a small recovery process. The recovery process can take a couple of days. You will most likely go home just a few hours after your wisdom teeth removal. You will want to take it and relax for the next couple of days. Some after wisdom teeth removal symptoms you might have are, swelling, bleeding, and pain. Your oral surgeon should give you a pain-killer to help with your recovery. Also, swelling, bleeding, and pain is normal for a few days, but your symptoms should subside or continue to get better after your wisdom teeth removal. If bleeding, pain, or swelling gets worse, to your oral surgeon, because untreated could lead to wisdom teeth removal complications.

One of the most common and most painful complications with wisdom teeth removal is dry sockets. Dry sockets are when your bone gets inflamed around the wisdom teeth removal area. To avoid dry sockets after wisdom teeth removal, make sure you do not drink from a straw or smoke until you are totally healed.

You are probably wondering when the right time for your wisdom teeth removal is. You should be visiting your general dentist every six months for a checkup. At your checkup, you dentist will take x-rays of your mouth to see if you need your wisdom teeth removed. When it is time to have your wisdom teeth removed, your dentist will refer you to an oral surgeon, who can do your wisdom teeth removal.

You should not delay in getting your wisdom teeth removal done, failure to do so, can cause a lot of problems. You do not want to have impacted wisdom teeth, and that can happen if you wait too long. A lot of people can feel their wisdom teeth starting to come up and down. If you feel your wisdom teeth trying to break through the surface, make sure you go to your dentist as soon as possible to to him about wisdom teeth removal. Wisdom teeth removal is important to your oral health and you should make sure you do not forget to have them removed. A lot of people are scared to have their wisdom teeth removal, but if you get them removed at the right time, it’s not a huge deal!

You don’t have to suffer from “Phagophobia”, or “the fear of swallowing” to experience issues when you are trying to take pills. Even though some pills are small in size, others are not. Especially when it comes to tablets. Some tablets, such as Vitamin C and E, can be quite large in size. Prescription drugs aren’t always small in size either. And they can be difficult to swallow.
But, relax, because you can learn how to swallow pills easily.

Sometimes, a person tenses up when they are attempting to take pills. This can actually cause the muscles of the neck and throat to tense up too. This can make it difficult to swallow even the smallest of pills. If this happens to you, before you attempt to take the prescription drugs or vitamins pills or tablets, stop. Take several deep breaths and relax your neck and throat muscles. Breathe in and breathe out deeply until you feel calm again.

If you still have a problem swallowing pills or tablets because your neck or throat relax, worry. Try sucking on an ice cube or a Popsicle right before you need to take your vitamins or prescription drugs. The ice cube or Popsicle will help numb your throat. In turn, your gag reflex won’t be as sensitive.

If you’re accustomed to throwing pills into the back of your throat to take them, that can cause too. Because, when your throat is stimulated by- what your mind perceives to be a foreign object- your natural gag reflex kicks in. You can end up gagging and coughing, (and not swallowing the pills or tablets), simply because they were put in your throat.

Instead, learn how to swallow pills easily by placing vitamins and prescriptions on the tip of your tongue. Then, take a small drink of water and tilt your head back slightly. Swallow the water and the pill or tablet should go down easily with the liquid.

Taking a small drink of water before you place the pill on your tongue can also help you swallow the vitamin or prescription drug easier too.

Large pills or tablets can also be cut in half with a pill cutter. Pill cutters are inexpensive, and they can be at your local drug store. A pill cutter will reduce the pill in size and can make it easier to swallow. Before you cut your pills or tablets in half, though, check with your healthcare professional first to make sure it’s okay to do this.

You can also learn how to swallow pills easily when they are blended into food. Some people do not like to take pills or tablets, no matter how small they are. The solution? Crush your pills up and mix them in with a small serving of apple sauce, gelatin, or pudding. Eat the applesauce, and you will not even notice the pills hidden inside. Again, you will need to check with your healthcare professional before you crush your pills or tablets. Some prescription drugs aren’t meant to be crushed before taking them. For example, drugs that are designed to be time-released are not to be crushed.
